Dogma
an official teaching of the Catholic Church
Mariology
Study of Mary
Venerate
a gift of great honor and respect to someone/something…but NOT the same as worship. Catholics VENERATE Mary, they do not worship her
Grace
a free gift of God’s Divine Life in our souls
List the four Marian Dogmas
Mother of God, Immaculate Conception, Perpetual Virginity, Assumption
Define the Marian Dogma, Mother of God, or theotokos
Mary is the mother of Jesus
Jesus is both God and Man,1 person, 2 natures
Therefore, Mary is the Mother of God
Define the Marian Dogma, Immaculate Conception
she was conceived without original sin
from the moment of conception in her mother’s sin, Mary was sinless
Define the Marian Dogma, Perpetual Virginity
our Lady is ever-virgin
before AND after Christ
she is a professed virgin in Jewish culture
“Behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son” (Isaiah 7:14)
Define the Marian Dogma, Assumption
Mary is assumed, taken by God, body and soul, into heaven at the end of her life
we don’t know whether or not Mary died
What does theotokos mean?
God bearer
Why do we say that Mary is the Mother of God
Mary gave birth to Jesus, who was fully God and fully human, so therefore she is the Mother of God
How is the dogma of the Assumption distinct from that of the Ascension?
In the Ascension, Jesus ascends of His own power and will because He is divine, however in the Assumption Mary does not raise herself but God raises her
How would you respond to somebody who asked you why you worship Mary.
Catholics do NOT worship Mary, but they do VENERATE her. We give her great honor.
Give examples of honoring Mary in the Bible (know what happens too)
Annunciation, Visitation, Finding in the Temple, Wedding at Cana
