Independent Clause
A clause that can stand alone as a sentence.
Compound Sentence
Two independent clauses joined by a conjunction.
Complex Sentence
One independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
Compound-Complex Sentence
Two or more independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses.
Prepositional Phrase
A phrase that begins with a preposition and modifies a word in the sentence.
Simile
Comparing two things using 'like' or 'as'.
Metaphor
Comparing two things without using 'like' or 'as'.
Hyperbole
Exaggeration for effect.
Personification
Giving human traits to nonhuman things.
Onomatopoeia
Words that sound like their meaning.
Alliteration
Repeating consonant sounds at the beginning of words.
Allusion
A reference to a well-known person, place, event, or work of art.
