Neuromuscular junction
nerve muscle fiber connection.
Recruitment
process of stimulating more motor units to increase the organ's strength of contraction.
Myographs
Instruments used to record muscle contractions.
Latent period
The phase after stimulation has occurred but during which a contraction is not yet apparent.
Contraction phase
Period during which the myogram line rises, indicating that contraction is in progress.
Relaxation phase
Period when the line falls, indicating a return to the resting state.
Trippe
When restimulation occurs soon after a twitch, each successive contraction has a larger amplitude than the previous one until a maximum plateau is reached.
Muscle fatigue
The state when the muscle can no longer sustain contractions
Wave summation
When a muscle is continually restimulated before the relaxation phase is over, causing the twitch waves to fuse together.
Incomplete tetanus
Slight relaxation is still visible between waves.
Complete tetanus
· Waves fuse completely into a single line.
