What makes up the central nervous system
The brain and spinal cord
What is the brain in charge of
All our complex behaviours it controls everything you do and makes all the important decisions
What are the different regions of the brain and what are they responsible for
Cerebral cortex- the wrinkly layer of Brain responsible for consciousness, intelligence , memory , language
Cerebellum- back of the brain responsible for controlling our balance and muscle coordination
Medulla- within the brain stem controls our unconscious activities like breathing and heart beating
Why is treating the brain so difficult
1- wide range of things could go wrong e.g. tumours , infection, trauma, mental health illness
2-in cased within skull surrounding brain tissue is fragile so extremely it difficult to physically fix anything
3- the brain is so complex - don’t fully understand difficult to fix anything with drugs and chemicals v cause we don’t understand the underlying processes
What are the 3 ways scientists can study the brain
1-studying people with brain damage
2- electrically stimulate different parts of brain(using electrode )
3- scanning the brain - CT scans using X-rays , Pet scans using radioactive chemicals , MRI scans using magnetic fields
What’s the difference between CT scans and Pet and MRI scans
CT scans are mainly used to see what areas of the brain are damaged
Pet and MRI cans are better at measuring the underlying activity of the brain
