Why is dna important
It contains instructions to make proteins which affect many different processes in the cells
What is a gene
A small section of DNA containing the instructions to make a type of protein
What are chromosomes?
They are made up of DNA and loosely spread out the nucleus and strings of chromatin during M phase
What do chromosomes look like
X
What is the centromere
Where the sister chromatids meet
Each side of the chromosome are
Sister chromatids
How many chromosomes do humans have
46, two of each 23 types
Homologous chromosome
Set of chromosomes that have the same gene in the same place
Mitotic spindle
Microtubules or spindle fibers that are made my centrioles and will separate the chromosomes during mitosis
Phrophase
Chromatin condenses into chromosomes and spindle fibers are created from the centrioles
Metaphases
Spindle fibers attach to the centromeres and chromosomes line up in the middle
Anaphase
Spindle pulls sister chromatids apart and they start to separate
Telophase
Chromosome reach opposite ends and the nuclear membrane starts to form, spindle dissolves, chromosomes condense
Cytokinesis
The cell finally splits apart into two identical daughter cells
