Cation
An atom or group of atoms that have lost one or more electrons, resulting in a positive charge.
Anion
An atom or group of atoms that have gained one or more electrons, resulting in a negative charge.
Isotopes
Atoms of the same element that have the same atomic number but different atomic masses due to varying numbers of neutrons.
Mass number
The total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.
Ionic Compounds
Compounds formed from metal and non-metal ions.
Polyatomic ions
Ions that consist of more than one atom, which are covalently bonded.
Lewis Structure
A diagram that shows the bonding between atoms of a molecule and the lone pairs of electrons.
Combustion
A chemical reaction that occurs when a substance combines with oxygen, releasing energy.
Alkane
A saturated hydrocarbon with single bonds.
Alkene
An unsaturated hydrocarbon with at least one double bond.
Alkyne
An unsaturated hydrocarbon with at least one triple bond.
Transition metals
Elements found in groups 3-12 that often use Roman numerals to indicate their charge in compounds.
