What is the internet?
A network of networks set up to allow computers to communicate with each other globally
What is the World Wide Web?
A collection of web pages that reside on computers connected to the internet. It uses the internet as a service to communicate the information contained within these pages
What connects the internet backbone between continents?
Transcontinental leased lines fed across seabeds
What connects directly to the internet backbone?
Nation internet service providers
What do national ISPs do with the internet connection?
They distribute it to smaller (regional/local) providers
Describe the hierarchy of internet distribution from backbone to end user
Backbone cables (connected by transcontinental seabed leased lines) → national ISPs → smaller providers → homes and businesses
What is a uniform resource locator (URL)
The full address of an internal resource. It specifies the location of a resource on the internet, including the resource name and usually the file type, so that a browser can request it from the server
What is a domain name?
A domain name identifies the area or domain that an internet resource resides in.
What does a DNS server do?
It translates a domain name into its corresponding IP address so that the correct server can be located and accessed
What is the structure of a domain name?
A hierarchy separated by full stops — e.g. leeds.gov.uk. The rightmost part is the Top Level Domain (TLD), and the next part is the 2nd Level Domain (2LD).
