liberty, equality, government by consent
individualism
the individual, not the state or collective, is the ultimate moral and political unit of value. Individuals are seen as rational beings capable of making their own decisions
Liberty (Freedom)
individuals posess rights to life, liberty, and property that cannot be taken away This includes key civil liberties like freedom of speech, religion, and assembly
Consent of the governed
political authority is only legitimate if it derives from the will of the people, usually expressed through democracy
rule of law
no one- not eeven the ruler of the government- is above the law. the law is applies equally and transparently to all citizens and institutions
constitutional government
the power of the state must be limited by a constitution that defines the governments functions, ivides its powers, and guarantees fundamental rights
private property
the right of individuals to own, use, and dispose of property is a fundamental component od liberty and economic freedom
tolerance
the state should be tolerant of different moral, religious, and philosophical view points (pluralism) allowing individuals to pursue their own conceptions of a good life
