ANOVA
Analysis of variance; a statistical test of whether the variance of scores between two or more groups is greater than the variance within groups.
Factorial ANOVA
An ANOVA (F test) that examines at least two independent variables.
Independent Variable (IV)
A factor or condition that is manipulated to determine its effect on a dependent variable.
Dependent Variable (DV)
The outcome or effect measured in response to changes in the independent variable.
Interaction
The effect of one independent variable on a dependent variable being dependent on the level of another independent variable.
Mixed Design
A design that includes at least one between-subjects factor and at least one within-subjects factor.
F Test
Statistical test developed by Sir Ronald A. Fisher to compare variances among groups.
Levene’s Test
A statistical test used to examine the assumption of homogeneity of variances across groups.
Type I Error
Incorrectly rejecting a true null hypothesis.
Null Hypothesis (H0)
The hypothesis stating that there is no effect or difference; used as a baseline for comparison.
Main Effect
The effect of one independent variable averaged across the levels of other independent variables.
Post Hoc Test
Tests performed after ANOVA to determine exactly where the differences lie between group means.
Effect Size (ω2)
A measure that indicates the magnitude of the effect of an independent variable on a dependent variable.
