Cartography
The art, science, and technology of making maps.
Thematic Map
A map designed to demonstrate a particular feature or concept.
Topographic Map
A map whose principal purpose is to portray and identify the features of the earth's surface.
Planimetric Map
Maps that represent horizontal positions and omit relief.
Photogrammetry
The use of photography to measure and map readings, especially from aerial photographs.
Remote Sensing
The acquisition of information about the earth's surface using sensors on satellites or aircraft.
Global Positioning System (GPS)
A system that uses satellites to determine precise locations on Earth.
Cadastral Map
A map delineating property boundaries for legal documentation.
Hydrographic Surveying
The measurement and description of the physical features of bodies of water.
GIS (Geographical Information System)
A computer system that captures, analyzes, manages, and presents geographic data.
Aerial Photography
The taking of photographs of the ground from an elevated position, commonly used in mapping.
Cartographic Draughtsmanship
The practice and skill of drawing and producing maps.
Atlas
A collection of maps, typically bound together.
Geodesy
The science of measuring and understanding Earth's geometric shape, orientation in space, and gravity field.
Quantitative Mapping
The representation of data with measurable values, often through numerical data.
Qualitative Mapping
The representation of data with non-measurable values, often through characteristics and descriptions.
Chart
A representation of spatial information for specific purposes, especially nautical or aeronautical navigation.
