- many businesses and factories failed
- millions of Americans lose their job
- many are homeless and hungry.

The Social Security Act of 1935
This was a program to help older Americans during The Depression. The government gave monthly checks to older people, unemployed people and people who had a disability.
TVA - Tennessee Valley Authority
This was part of the New Deal - the government hired workers to build about 50 dams along rivers in the South and in Tennessee to stop flooding and produce electricity.
Louis Armstrong
A famous jazz musician from the Jazz Age. He recorded a song called "St. Louis Blues" with Bessie Smith.
Assembly line
In a factory, a product is moved from worker to worker, with each person performing a single task in the making of the product.
Henry Ford
American businessman who started the Ford Motor Company and who invented the modern assembly lines. He DID NOT invent cars.
Soup kitchens
During the Great Depression, these were places that helped feed people that couldn't find work and had no money for food.
Hoovervilles
The camps set up by the homeless during the Great Depression. Made from what ever materials they could find.
