Estrogens and Progesterone
Hormones responsible for feminine characteristics, reproductive cycle, breast tissue development, and ovum production.
Relaxin
Hormone that softens connective tissue to allow pelvis to stretch for childbirth and increase flexibility.
Inhibin
Hormone produced by the ovaries that inhibits follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) to prevent further maturation of ova.
Corpus Luteum
Area on the ovary where the egg is discharged during ovulation; produces high levels of progesterone to maintain the uterine lining.
Normal Menstrual Discharge Components
Includes blood, tissue fluid, epithelial cells, and mucus.
Prolactin (PRL)
Hormone that causes breast milk secretion.
Oxytocin
Hormone that causes breast milk letdown during feeding.
Placenta's Role in Lactation
Produces hormones that aid in the production of breast milk.
