Mobilization
The process of moving troops and supplies and making them ready for war.
The Schlieffen Plan
Germany's military strategy to conquer France before Russia could mobilize.
Total War
The complete mobilization of resources and people, affecting the lives of all citizens in the warring countries.
Stalemate
A situation in warfare where no progress can be made; characterized by trench warfare and heavy losses.
Propaganda
Media produced by a government designed to convince the public of something, often used during wartime to increase enthusiasm.
Alliances
Formal agreements between countries to support each other in times of war; key players included the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance.
Armenian Genocide
The systematic destruction of the Armenian people during WWI, resulting in approximately 1 million deaths.
Trench Warfare
A type of combat in which opposing troops fight from trenches facing each other.
Zimmerman Telegram
A secret telegram sent by Germany to Mexico proposing a military alliance against the U.S. during WWI.
Bolsheviks
A faction of the Russian socialist movement that gained power during the Russian Revolution, leading to the establishment of a communist government.
Lusitania
A British ocean liner sunk by a German submarine in 1915, leading to increased tensions and U.S. involvement in WWI.
Civil War in Russia
The conflict between the Red Army (Bolsheviks) and the White Army (anti-communists) after the Bolshevik Revolution.
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
The peace treaty signed between the Bolshevik government of Russia and the Central Powers, which ended Russia's involvement in WWI.
League of Nations
An international peacekeeping organization established after WWI to prevent future wars.
Nationalism
A strong sense of pride and loyalty to one's nation, often a factor leading to tensions and conflicts between countries.
Imperialism
The policy of extending a country's power and influence through colonization or military force, contributing to the causes of WWI.
