Hydraulic System Components

cylinder

This is a mechanical actuator that is used to give a unidirectional force through a unidirectional stroke. It has many applications, notably in construction equipment, manufacturing machinery, elevators, and civil engineering.

transmission lines

This is a distributed system. The motion of the fluid in the transient condition takes place under the action of fluid inertia, friction, and compressibility, as well as the driving pressure forces.

Filter

This is a component within a hydraulic system that removes damaging particulates by forcing hydraulic fluid through a porous filter element. The filter element catches contaminants and prevents them from re-entering the fluid flow and damaging other pieces of equipment further downstream.

Directional Control Valve

These are one of the most fundamental parts of hydraulic and pneumatic systems. DCVs allow fluid flow into different paths from one or more sources. DCVs will usually consist of a spool inside a cylinder which is mechanically or electrically actuated.

Pump

These are used in hydraulic drive systems and can be hydrostatic or hydrodynamic. This is a mechanical source of power that converts mechanical power into hydraulic energy. It generates flow with enough power to overcome pressure induced by the load at the pump outlet.

Resevoir

This a tank or container designed to store sufficient hydraulic fluid for all conditions of operation. Usually these must have the capability of containing extra fluid not being circulated in the system during certain modes of operation.
