Epithelial Tissue
A type of tissue that protects body surfaces, absorbs nutrients, releases substances from glands, and filters waste.
Avascular
Describes a tissue that is not supplied by blood vessels and gets nourished by diffusion.
Simple Squamous Epithelium
A single layer of flat cells that facilitates rapid diffusion and filtration.
Diffusion
The process of moving substances from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
A single layer of cube-shaped cells that is involved in secretion and absorption.
Microvilli
Small projections on the surface of some epithelial cells that increase surface area for absorption.
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Multiple layers of flat cells providing protection against abrasion and dehydration.
Keratinized
Refers to stratified squamous epithelium where the outer cells are dead and filled with keratin.
Pseudostratified Ciliated Columnar Epithelium
A tissue that appears to be stratified but is not, often containing cilia and found in the respiratory tract.
Transitional Epithelium
A type of tissue that can stretch and is found in areas such as the urinary bladder.
