Power
Measurement of how much energy is transferred per second.
Energy
The ability to do work or cause change.
Efficiency
The measure of how much of the energy supplied to a device is transferred into a useful form, rather than being wasted.
Renewable Energy
Energy from sources that can be replenished as we use them.
Non-renewable Energy
Energy from sources that are finite and will run out.
Fossil Fuels
Non-renewable energy sources formed from the remains of ancient plants and animals over millions of years (coal, gas, oil).
Greenhouse Gases
Gases that trap heat in the atmosphere.
Global Warming
The gradual increase in Earth's temperature due to the greenhouse effect.
Energy Resource
Stores of energy that we transfer into useful forms like electricity.
Efficiency Formula
Efficiency = useful output / total input.
Energy Use Calculation
Energy used = power x time.
Energy Bill Calculation
Cost = energy used x rate.
Carbon Dioxide
A pollutant produced by burning fossil fuels, increases the greenhouse effect.
Methane
A potent greenhouse gas emitted from fossil fuel use.
Sulphur Dioxide
A pollutant that causes acid rain, produced from fossil fuels.
Hydroelectric Energy
Energy generated by moving water, typically from dammed water releasing gravitational potential energy.
Solar Energy
Energy harnessed from sunlight, converted to electricity or thermal energy.
Wind Energy
Energy obtained from the movement of air, converted into electrical energy.
Geothermal Energy
Energy harnessed from the Earth's internal heat.
Biofuel
Fuel made from organic materials, such as plants.
Tidal Energy
Energy derived from the gravitational pull of the moon, harnessed from the movement of tides.
Wave Energy
Energy obtained from the movement of waves on the ocean.
