Lymphatic System
Consists of lymphatic vessels and lymphoid organs; responsible for maintaining fluid balance, transporting lipoproteins, and defending against infections.
Edema
Localized swelling caused by the accumulation of tissue fluid.
Lymphocytes
White blood cells that play a crucial role in the immune response, including B and T cells.
Innate Immunity
Non-specific defense mechanisms that are present from birth and provide the first line of defense against pathogens.
Acquired Immunity
Specific immune response developed over time due to exposure to antigens.
Phagocytes
Cells that engulf and digest pathogens and debris, including neutrophils and macrophages.
Complement System
A group of plasma proteins that enhances immune responses and leads to the destruction of pathogens.
Cytokines
Signaling proteins released by cells that mediate and regulate immunity and inflammation.
Antibodies (Immunoglobins)
Proteins produced by B cells that specifically bind to antigens to neutralize them or mark them for destruction.
Monoclonal Antibodies
Antibodies produced from a single clone of B cells that are all identical and target a specific antigen.
Helper T Cells
T cells that activate other immune cells, including B cells and cytotoxic T cells, and regulate immune responses.
Autoimmune Diseases
Conditions in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues.
Allergies
Hypersensitive immune responses to substances that are normally harmless.
Inflammatory Response
A localized reaction to injury characterized by redness, swelling, heat, and pain caused by increased blood flow and immune cell activity.
Spleen
An organ that filters blood, removes old blood cells, and helps fight infection.
