Condensed Molecular Formula
A representation of a molecule showing the number and type of atoms present.
Structural Formula
A representation of a molecule showing the arrangement and connectivity of atoms.
Expanded Structural Formula
A detailed representation of a molecule showing all atoms and bonds.
Element
A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical reaction and is composed of identical atoms.
Periodic Table
A chart of all known elements organized by their atomic number and properties.
Atomic Bonding
Atoms of elements (except group 8 atoms) are unstable alone and bond with other atoms to become more stable.
Compound
A pure substance which contains two or more elements chemically combined (bonded together).
Inorganic Compound
Compounds that usually are small and have a simple formula: e.g. CO2 H2O NaCl
Organic Compound
Compounds that always contain carbon and are often large and complex (no simple formula). Many are made by living things: e.g. proteins DNA carbohydrates
Compound Definition
A pure substance that contains 2 or more elements chemically combined.
