Mine Surveying
A branch of mining science and technology that involves measurements, calculations, and mapping for mineral extraction.
Total Station
An electronic device that combines electronic distance measurement, an electronic theodolite, and a programmed calculator.
Adit
A horizontal or nearly horizontal passage driven from the surface for working and dewatering a mine.
Back Fill
Waste rock or other material used to fill a mine out stope to prevent caving.
Cage
An elevator for workers and materials in a mine shaft.
Dip
The angle at which a bed, stratum, or vein is inclined from the horizontal.
Stope
An underground room or working area from which ore is removed.
Strike
The horizontal course or bearing of an inclined bed, stratum, or vein.
Vein
A thin deposit of minerals between definite boundaries.
GPS in Mining
A surveying method that is faster than traditional total station surveying and does not require multiple control points.
Gangue
Undesired minerals associated with ore.
Sump
An excavation made at the bottom of a shaft to collect water.
Tunnel
A horizontal or nearly horizontal underground passage that is open to the surface at both ends.

Back
The top of a drift, cross cut, or roof.
Collar
The timbering or concrete around the mouth of a shaft.
Chute
A channel or trough, often used underground, through which material is transferred by gravity.
