Why did John include 7 signs or miracles in his Gospel?
Because 7 is the number of completion and so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, you can see that he is the Messiah. And by believing this you may have life in him
What is the purpose of signs or miracles?
John thinks of them as a sign because a sign points somewhere, so he believes that these miracles, signs, will help later on in the bible (when he gets hung on the cross)
What does it mean that parables require a response?
Jesus often used the phrase “let the person who hears hear” to end the parables.

What is the basic definition of a kingdom?
The action and dominion of a king - his reign and authority and anyone who is under his authority.
What is the basic definition of the kingdom of God?
The Kingdom of God is God’s reign in action including how He reigns and who He reigns over.
How does God's kingdom differ from the human kingdoms like Babylon, Greece, etc.?
They will all fall but God’s kingdom is eternal.
Who would have been expected to bring God's kingdom to earth?
The Messiah
What does Israel expect the Messiah to be based on their past kings?
A person of power, status, and a national figurehead. A military leader, someone to crush their physical ememies. Not the compassionate, kind, caring servant they got.
What did Jesus mean when he declared "the kingdom of God was near."?
Closeness, proximity (as opposed to soon but not quite)
How did Jesus speak with judgment?
Jesus spoke of judgment, just as John did, but he spoke about it as a “still future” event (Jesus’ second coming)and emphasized the need for repentance and readiness.
What three enemies did Jesus defeat through his death and resurrection?

Herod executed many of the people who supported him
He tried to offer up his granddaughter and his wife for sacrifice.
He was an evil person that showed no mercy
He was selfish and power hungry
Alexander the Great
A historic military conqueror and king of macedonia. He's known for creating one of the largest empires in ancient history by the age of 30 (land went into Greece, Egypt, and Persia)
John the Baptist
The person who baptized Jesus. He came in the spirit of Elijah to prepare the way for Jesus.
Matthew
Matthew was a tax collector and one of Jesus' twelve apostles. He wrote the Gospel of Matthew.
Simeon
He was promised to see the messiah before he died and as soon as he saw Jesus he told God that he was ready to die.
Pharisees
Pharisees
Their name means separatist. They were known for their strict adherence to Jewish law and traditions and “putting a fence around the law”
Sadducees
One of the two most prominent religeous groups in this time period. They were Jewish leaders and are associated with the priests.
Essenes
A group know for seclusion and having a close knit community with no new members. They are also credited with writing the dead sea scrolls.
Zealots
A Jewish political movement during the intertestamental period. They wanted to overthrow the Roman government.
How was the "Silent Years" title fitting and also not fitting for the time between the Testaments?
It’s fitting because this period wasn’t recorded in the bible. But it’s not fitting because a lot was going on that just wasn’t recorded.
How much time was there between the Old and New Testaments?
400 years
