social influence
the ways in which external social factors alter our behaviour
conformity
A type of social influence where we choose to go along with the majority. can occur in public or private.
compliance
individuals may go along with the group in order to gain their approval or avoid their disapproval. Results in public compliance without private attitude change.
internalisation
occurs when individuals genuinly adjust their behaviour and opinions to those of a group.
informative social influence ( ISI )
The desire to be right. We conform by looking at others whom we believe to be correct, and give us information on how to behave, in a novel situation generally leading to internalisation.
Normative social influence (NSI)
The desire to be liked and fit in, we conform because we think that others will approve and accept us- generally leading to compliance.
independence
Unresponsive to the norms of the group.
anti conformity
Consistently oppose the norms of the group. Is actually a type of conformity because it is still determined by the norms of the group.
