Duodenum
The first segment of the small intestine.
Jejunum
The second segment of the small intestine.
Ileum
The third segment of the small intestine.
Role of the duodenum
It receives chyme from the stomach and digestive enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver.
Functions of the jejunum
Major site for nutrient absorption, particularly carbohydrates and proteins.
Ileum absorption
Primarily absorbs Vitamin B12 and bile salts.
Surface area structures in small intestine
Villi and microvilli increase the surface area for absorption.
Epidermis
The outermost layer of the skin.
Dermis
The layer that lies beneath the epidermis.
Hypodermis
The deepest layer of the skin, also known as the subcutaneous layer.
Function of the epidermis
Provides a barrier to protect underlying tissues.
Contents of the dermis
Contains blood vessels, nerve endings, hair follicles, and glands.
Role of the hypodermis
Acts as an insulator and shock absorber, anchoring the skin to underlying structures.
Keratinocytes
The primary cells found in the epidermis.
