What is the primary function of the immune system?
To provide resistance to disease and defend against internal and external enemies.
Is the immune system a separate organ system?
No, it's a functional system mainly associated with the lymphatic system.
What are the two main mechanisms the body uses for defense?
Nonspecific immunity and specific immunity.
Define nonspecific immunity.
A general defense mechanism that targets any pathogen, not specific to any particular one.
Define specific immunity.
A targeted defense mechanism that targets only specific pathogens.
Give examples of non-specific defenses (innate defenses).
Skin, barriers, fever, inflammation.
What is a characteristic of specific defense?
Creating antibodies or targeting a specific type of pathogen.
