Lymphatic System and Immunity Overview
Lymphatic System and Immunity Overview
Functions of the Immune System
The immune system is a functional system, not a separate organ system.
It is closely associated with the lymphatic system.
Provides resistance to disease.
Defends against internal and external enemies.
Defense Mechanism
Organized like a military with patrolling defense.
Recognizes and destroys invaders.
Two Mechanisms of Body Defense
Nonspecific Immunity
General defense.
Targets any pathogen, regardless of type.
Also known as innate defenses.
Examples:
Skin (barriers)
Fever
Inflammation
Specific Immunity
Targets specific pathogens.
Involves antibodies.
Analogy to Military
Non-specific immunity: Deploying all troops against any enemy.
Specific immunity: Targeting a specific individual, like a general.
Examples of Defenses
Nonspecific (Innate) Defenses
Barriers like skin.
Fever.
Inflammation.
Specific Defenses
Creating antibodies.
Targeting specific pathogens.
