Name the agreements made at Yalta, February 1945

  1. Germany and Berlin divided into 4 zones: American, British, Soviet, French.

  2. USSR would enter war against Japan.

  3. Free Elections in countries freed from Nazi occupation (and in Stalin’s spheres of influence.)

  4. Join the UN.

  5. Nazi war criminals would be captured and put on trial/only unconditional surrender from Germany.

  6. Reparations were of the use of a good/service equivalent to $20 billion.

  1. Stalin wanted to dismember Germany and prevent it from developing its own industries. Roosevelt and Churchill disagreed, not wanting the rise of another extremist government (Hitler caused the war)

  • on the eve of the conference, Truman informed Stalin that America had successfully tested a nuclear bomb.

  • Britain and America had kept the Manhattan project a secret from ‘their ally.’

  • Stalin already away due to Soviet agents.

  • USA and Britain would open a second front by invading Europe through Nazi-occupied France.

  • USSR would invade Nazi Germany from the east.

  • USSR would invade Japan once Nazi Germany was defeated.

  • The Polish border would be moved to the west, so Poland would gain territory from Germany and lose it to the USSR from the east.

  • UN to be established once the war was over.
