Followers of Muhammad spread Islam through the Arabian Peninsula, uniting it under Abu Bakr, the first caliph.

Abu Bakr and his followers have taken over two-thirds of the Eastern Roman Empire and almost all of the Sassanid Empire

The third Caliph, Uthman, is assassinated

656-661 CE

First Muslim Civil war, or Fitna

661 CE

Ali, son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad, is assassinated at Kufa

680-692 CE

Second Fitna.

747 CE

Abu Muslim of the Abbasids leads a revolt in easter Khorasan

749 CE

Kufa is occupied by the Abbasids

750 CE

Marwan, the last Umayyad Caliph, is pursued and killed in Egypt. Abbasids officially have leadership of the whole Caliphate
