Donor
The person donating the organ or tissue.
Recipient
The person receiving the organ or tissue transplant.
Allograft
Transfer of organ or tissues between genetically different individuals.
Xenograft
Transplanted tissue from another species.
MHC molecules
Also known as human leukocyte antigen, these are antigen presenting molecules.
HLA antigens
MHC molecules in humans.
HLA haplotype
The inherited package of HLA genes from each parent.
Hyperacute rejection
Occurs within minutes to hours of a transplant due to pre-existing antibodies.
Acute rejection
Occurs within days or weeks of a transplant, mainly mediated by T cells.
Chronic rejection
Slow form of graft rejection occurring over months or years, mediated by CD4 T cells and antibodies.
