Joint
The site of union or junction of two or more bones.
Fibrous Joints
Joints connected by fibrous tissue; immovable.
Cartilaginous Joints
Joints connected by cartilage; partially movable.
Synovial Joints
Joints separated by cavities; freely mobile.
Synarthroses
Immovable joints.
Amphiarthroses
Slightly movable joints.
Diarthroses
Freely movable joints.
Suture
A type of fibrous joint found between skull bones.
Gomphosis
A fibrous joint between a tooth and its socket.
Syndesmosis
A type of fibrous joint connected by a ligament.
Primary Cartilaginous Joints (Synchondroses)
Joints connected by hyaline cartilage; no movement and ossify with age.
Secondary Cartilaginous Joints (Symphysis)
Joints connected by fibrocartilage; allow limited movement and never ossify.
Joint Cavity
An area in synovial joints containing synovial fluid.
Synovial Membrane
Lines the joint capsule and secretes synovial fluid.
Biaxial Joints
Joints allowing movement in two axes.
Multiaxial Joints
Joints allowing movement in multiple axes.
