Hungarian uprising

1956 - Rakosi is overthrown and replaced by Nagy

Nagy a much more liberal leader announced hungry would be leaving the Warsaw pact,

1000 Russian tanks roll in to Budapest and Nagy is imprisoned, 4000 killed. Makes the US look weak as they did nothing

1959 - U2 spy plane shot down over USSR, piolot Garry powers is captured.

Makes USA look weak as Eisenhower lied about the plane and ussr now had proof of USA espionage.

Led to Kruschev walking out of Paris peace talks

Suez crisis

1956 - Egypt’s leader nasser bourght weapons from the Czechs, Dulles then withdrew their financial aid

Nasser then nationalised the Anglo French Suez Canal. Israel, Britain and France then prepared military action occupying the canal but were forced to withdraw due to American pressure
