Baroque Concerto
A piece of music for one or more solo instruments accompanied by an orchestra.
Concerto Grosso
A type of concerto written for a group of solo instruments (concertino) plus a larger ensemble (ripieno).
Basso Continuo
The bass accompaniment in Baroque music, typically consisting of a harpsichord or organ and a cello or bassoon.
Homophonic Texture
A musical texture where all parts move in harmony, often with the same rhythm.
Polyphonic Texture
A musical texture that includes independent melodies played simultaneously.
Virtuoso
A performer with outstanding technical skill in music.
Ritornello
A musical form where the whole orchestra alternates playing the theme with episodes played by soloists.
Ornamentation
Decorative notes added to a melody, such as trills and turns.
Harpsichord
A keyboard instrument used in Baroque music, characterized by short, plucked notes that cannot be sustained.
Terraced Dynamics
Sudden changes in volume that are characteristic of Baroque music.
