what is seen when they start school

• teacher assessments showed girls head of boys in all 7 areas of learning such as literacy, maths, emotional development

what is seen in KS1-KS3 and GCSE

• girls consistently do better than boys, especially in english where the gender gap widens with age

• at GCSE, the gap is approximately 10 percentage points

what is seen at alevel

• girls are more likely to sit, pass and get higher grades eventhough the gap is smaller than GCSE

• 46.8% girls got A-C while only 42.2% boys did

what is the relation between gender and class/ethnicity

• boys are doing better in education than they were before despite still being behind girls

• McVeigh- there are more similarities in girls/boys achievement than there are differences- the gaps are much larger between classes and ethnicities → class gap at GCSE was 3x bigger than gender gap
