Vastus Lateralis

origin: Femur: greater trochanter

Insertion: Tibial tuberosity via patella tendon.

Action: Extends the knee

Innervation: Femoral nerve

Vastus Medialis 

Origin: Femur: Linea aspera

Insertion: Tibial tuberosity via patellar tendon.

Action: Extends the knee

Innervation: Femoral nerve

Vastus Intermedius

Origin: Femur: shaft

Insertion: Tibial tuberosity via patellar tendon.

Action: Extends the knee

Innervation: Femoral nerve

Rectus Femoris

Origin: STRAIGHT HEAD: hip bone: anterior inferior iliac spine. OBLIQUE HEAD: Hip bone: acetabulum

Insertion: Tibial tuberosity via patellar tendon

Action: Extends the knee

Innervation: Femoral nerve

Sartorius

Origin: Hip: anterior superior iliac spine

Insertion: Tibia

Action: Flexes and abducts hip, laterally rotates thigh

Innervation: Femoral nerve

Posterior Compartment (thigh)

• Biceps femoris • Semitendinosus

Hamstrings: Action: Flex knee

• Semimembranosus

Biceps Femoris

Origin: long head: hip: ischial tuberosity. Short head: femur: linea aspera

Insertion: Fibula: head

Action: flexes the knee and extends the hip

Innervation: Sciatic nerve -tibial brach (long head); Common peroneal (short head)

Semitendinosus

Origin: Hip: ischial tuberosity

Insertion: Tibia

Action: flexes the knee and extends the hip

Innervation: Tibial branch of the sciatic nerve

Semimembranosus

Origin: hip: ischial tuberosity

Insertion: Tibia

Action: Flexes the knee and extends at the hip

Innervation: Tibial branch of sciatic nerve

Medial Compartment (thigh)

• Adductor magnus • Adductor longusm• Adductor brevis • Gracilis• Pectineus

Adductor Magnus

Origin: Hip: Ischium and pubis.

Insertion: Femur: linea aspera.

Action: Adducts the hip

Innervation: Obturator nerve

Adductor Longus

Origin: Hip: pubis

Insertion: Femur: line aspera

Action: Adducts and medially rotates thigh, flexes hip

Innervation: Obturator nerve

Adductor Brevis

Origin: Hip: pubiss

Insertion: Femur: line aspera.

Action: Adducts and medially rotates thigh, flexes hip

Innervation: Obturator nerve

Gracilis

Origin: Hip bone: pubis.

Insertion: Tibia

Action: Adducts and medially rotates thigh, flexes hip

Innervation: Obturator nerve

Pectineus

Origin: Hip bone: Pubis

Insertion: Femur: lesser trochanter

Action: Adducts and medially rotates thigh, flexes hip

Innervation: Femoral nerve
