What is peer review?
the process of subjecting a piece of research to independent scrutiny by other psychologists working in a similar field who consider the research in terms of its validity, significance and originality
What are the three key aspects that need to be controlled in peer review?
Anonymity, publication bias, and burying research
Why is anonymity needed in peer review?
- allows for a more honest appraisal
- can encourage too much criticism of the work
Why does publication bias need to be controlled?
- editors prefer to publish headline grabbing findings to increase circulation of their publication
- leads to file drawer problem where editors ignore material that doesn't have positive results
- this gives a false impression of the current state of psychology
What is burying research?
- reviewers prefer research that matches their own, tending to criticise conflicting research
- scientists are unusually chosen and pass findings in line with current opinion more than new research
- innovative and challenging research being rejected leads to a slowing down in the rate of change
