Posterior Fossa
The area containing structures located within the skull below the tentorium cerebelli and above the foramen magnum.
Mesencephalon
Embryonic origin that contributes to the midbrain in adult structure.
Metencephalon
Embryonic origin that gives rise to the pons and cerebellum in adults.
Myelencephalon
Embryonic origin that develops into the medulla oblongata.
Aqueduct of Sylvius
The passageway connecting the third and fourth ventricles of the brain.
Cerebellum
Largest structure in the posterior fossa; involved in motor control and coordination.
Brainstem
Includes the medulla, pons, and midbrain; central to many basic bodily functions.
Cranial Nerves III-XII
A set of nerves that emerge from the brainstem; involved in diverse functions including motor control and sensory feedback.
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
Fluid that cushions the brain and spinal cord, flowing through various structures including the fourth ventricle.
Decussation of the Pyramids
Crossing over of nerve fibers in the medulla, leading to contralateral control of body movements.
Inferior Olivary Nuclei
Nuclei in the medulla that relay information from the cerebellum to the motor systems of the body.
Medial Longitudinal Fasciculus
A fiber tract in the brainstem that coordinates head and eye movements.
Hypoglossal Nerve (CN XII)
Cranial nerve responsible for motor control of the tongue.
Spinal Accessory Nerve (CN XI)
Cranial nerve involved in motor control of the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles.
Vagus Nerve (CN X)
Cranial nerve providing parasympathetic innervation to thoracic and abdominal organs.
Glossopharyngeal Nerve (CN IX)
Cranial nerve involved in taste and motor functions related to the pharynx.
Trigeminal Nerve (CN V)
Cranial nerve responsible for sensation in the face and motor functions such as chewing.
Cerebellar Peduncles
Bundles of nerve fibers that connect the cerebellum to the brainstem, facilitating communication.
Corticospinal Pathways
Major pathways for transmitting motor signals from the brain to the spinal cord.
Pontine Tegmentum
Region of the pons containing critical pathways for motor control and consciousness regulation.
Superior Colliculus
Structure in the midbrain important for visual
