Abraham and Isaac
In Genesis 22, God commands Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac as a test of faith. Abraham obeys, but God stops him at the last moment and provides a ram instead. Meaning: absolute faith and obedience, willingness to sacrifice what is most precious, divine testing.
Alpha and Omega
The first and last letters of the Greek alphabet; in Revelation, God/Christ calls Himself the “Alpha and Omega.” Meaning: God as the beginning and end of all things; eternity; totality; ultimate authority.
Cain
In Genesis 4, Cain kills his brother Abel out of jealousy when God favors Abel’s offering. God marks Cain and condemns him to wander. Meaning: jealousy leading to violence, fratricide, guilt, alienation, being “marked” by wrongdoing.
Creation Story
Genesis 1–2 describes God creating the world in six days (light, sky, land, life, humans) and resting on the seventh; Adam and Eve live in Eden. Meaning: divine origin of the universe, order out of chaos, original innocence and harmony.
Daniel
In the Book of Daniel, he refuses to stop praying to God and is thrown into a lions’ den, but God protects him. Meaning: steadfast faith under persecution, courage, divine protection.
David and Bathsheba
King David commits adultery with Bathsheba and arranges the death of her husband Uriah to conceal it (2 Samuel 11). Meaning: abuse of power, moral failure, temptation, guilt, and eventual repentance.
Eye of the Needle
Jesus says it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God (Matthew 19:24). Meaning: extreme difficulty (especially for the wealthy) attaining salvation; dangers of materialism.
Filthy Lucre
Phrase from the New Testament referring to money gained dishonestly or shamefully. Meaning: greed; corrupt or immoral profit.
Four Horsemen
In Revelation 6, four riders symbolize conquest (or pestilence), war, famine, and death. Meaning: catastrophic destruction; apocalypse; end-times judgment.
Golden Calf
While Moses receives the Ten Commandments, the Israelites build and worship a golden idol (Exodus 32). Meaning: idolatry, betrayal of faith, worship of wealth or false gods
Goliath
Giant Philistine warrior defeated by the young shepherd David with a sling (1 Samuel 17). Meaning: a powerful adversary; triumph of the underdog through courage and faith.
Good Samaritan
In Jesus’s parable (Luke 10), a Samaritan helps a beaten man after religious leaders ignore him. Meaning: compassion across social or ethnic boundaries; mercy toward strangers.
Writing on the Wall
In Daniel 5, mysterious writing appears predicting King Belshazzar’s downfall. Meaning: clear sign of impending doom; inevitable judgment.
Ishmael
Son of Abraham and Hagar, sent away with his mother but promised to become a great nation (Genesis 16, 21). Meaning: exile, rejection, outsider status, survival.
Jacob
Son of Isaac who deceives his brother Esau for his birthright; later wrestles with God and is renamed Israel (Genesis 32). Meaning: struggle, transformation, persistence, spiritual rebirth.
Job / Job’s Comforters
Job, a righteous man, loses everything as a test of faith (Book of Job). His friends insist he must deserve his suffering. Meaning: undeserved suffering, endurance, faith amid hardship; misguided attempts to explain tragedy.
Jonah
Prophet who flees God’s command, is swallowed by a great fish, repents, and fulfills his mission (Book of Jonah). Meaning: avoidance of responsibility; second chances; mercy and repentance.
Judas Iscariot / Judas’ kiss
Disciple who betrays Jesus to authorities with a kiss for thirty pieces of silver (Gospels). Meaning: betrayal disguised as affection; treachery for personal gain.
King Ahab and Jezebel
Wicked rulers of Israel who promote idol worship and persecute prophets (1 Kings). Meaning: corrupt leadership; manipulation; moral decay.
Lazarus
In John 11, Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead; in another parable, a poor man named Lazarus is comforted after death while a rich man suffers. Meaning: resurrection, hope beyond death, reversal of fortunes.
Manna
Miraculous bread from heaven that feeds the Israelites in the wilderness (Exodus 16). Meaning: divine sustenance; providence during hardship.
Milk and Honey
Description of the Promised Land as abundant and fertile (Exodus 3:8). Meaning: prosperity, blessing, abundance.
Noah and the Flood
God floods the earth to cleanse it of wickedness; Noah builds an ark to save his family and animal pairs (Genesis 6–9). Meaning: judgment and renewal; survival; covenant (rainbow as promise).
Original Sin / The Fall
Adam and Eve eat from the Tree of Knowledge and are expelled from Eden (Genesis 3). Meaning: loss of innocence; disobedience; humanity’s inherent sinful nature.
Pearl of Great Price
In Matthew 13, a merchant sells all he has to buy a valuable pearl. Meaning: something of supreme worth requiring total commitment or sacrifice
Philistine
Historically, enemies of Israel; figuratively, a person indifferent or hostile to culture and intellectual pursuits. Meaning: materialistic, uncultured individual.
Prodigal Son
Parable (Luke 15) of a son who wastes his inheritance but is welcomed back by his forgiving father. Meaning: redemption; unconditional love; repentance and grace.
Red Sea
Moses parts the sea so the Israelites escape Egypt; the pursuing Egyptians drown (Exodus 14). Meaning: miraculous deliverance; liberation from oppression.
Ruth and Naomi
Ruth loyally stays with her widowed mother-in-law Naomi and is rewarded with a new life and lineage (Book of Ruth). Meaning: loyalty, devotion, faithfulness rewarded
Samson and Delilah
Delilah betrays Samson by cutting his hair, the source of his strength (Judges 16). Meaning: betrayal through seduction; downfall due to weakness.
Scapegoat
In Leviticus 16, a goat symbolically bears the community’s sins and is sent into the wilderness. Meaning: person unfairly blamed or burdened with others’ guilt
Seven Deadly Sins
Pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, sloth; traditional list of major vices in Christian teaching. Meaning: fundamental moral failings that lead to sin.
Seven Virtues
Chastity, temperance, charity, diligence, patience, kindness, humility; virtues opposing the seven deadly sins. Meaning: moral excellence; righteous character.
Sodom and Gomorrah
Cities destroyed by fire and brimstone for extreme wickedness (Genesis 19). Meaning: moral corruption; divine punishment.
Solomon
King famed for wisdom (e.g., judging between two women claiming the same child); built the Temple but later fell into excess (1 Kings). Meaning: wisdom, justice, wealth, but also human frailty.
Ten Commandments
Moral laws given to Moses on Mount Sinai (Exodus 20), including prohibitions against murder, theft, adultery, etc. Meaning: foundational moral code; divine law.
Thirty Pieces of Silver
The payment Judas receives for betraying Jesus (Matthew 26). Meaning: price of betrayal; selling out for money.
Tower of Babel
Humans attempt to build a tower to reach heaven; God confuses their language and scatters them (Genesis 11). Meaning: human pride; failed ambition; origin of linguistic division.
Twelve Tribes of Israel
Descendants of Jacob’s twelve sons forming the nation of Israel. Meaning: unity, chosen people, foundational community.
Whited Sepulchre
Jesus calls hypocritical religious leaders “whitewashed tombs,” clean outside but full of decay within (Matthew 23:27). Meaning: hypocrisy; outward righteousness masking inner corruption.
