Covalent bonding
non metal to a non metal
Formed when two positive nuclei are held together by their common attraction for a shared pair of electrons
Sharing of electrons to achieve a stable electron arrangement of noble gas
Ionic bonds
form between metal and non-metal
The electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions
Lose/gain of electrons to make ions
Covalent moleculer
Low melting point and boiling point
Don’t conduct
Strong covalent bonds within molecules and weak between molecules
Covalent network
High melting point and boiling point
Don’t dissolve in water
One giant structure with strong Covalent bonds
Ionic compound
High melting point and boiling point- strong ionic bonds
Don’t conduct when solid , only went in a solution or molten as ionic lattice breaks up allowing the ions to be free to move
Form lattice structures of oppositely charged ions with each positive ion surrounded by negative ions and each negative ion surrounded by positive ions
Ion
Formed when atoms lose or gain electrons to keep stable electron arrangement of noble gas
Knowledge of chemistry- magnesium oxide
when magnesium burns in oxygen, it reacts to form magnesium oxide. The magnesium combines with the oxygen from the air, so the mass of the product is heavier than the original magnesium. This happens because oxygen atoms join the magnesium atoms.
Magnesium gain oxygen, making the final mass bigger than just magnesium alone.
Before- Mg + O2
After - MgO
mg = O
