Multiple Test Media
Media containing more than one substrate, indicator, and reaction being observed.
Triple Sugar Iron Agar (TSI)
Tests the bacteria's ability to utilize glucose, sucrose, and lactose. Indicator is phenol red.
Yellow Media (TSI)
Indicates the bacteria can utilize glucose, sucrose, and/or lactose in TSI.
Cysteine Desulfurase Test (TSI)
Determines the presence of cysteine desulfurase, indicated when hydrogen sulfide interacts with iron, turning the media black.
Hydrogen Sulfide Production (TSI)
Media turning black indicates this is produced from cysteine desulfurase breaking down cysteine.
K
Abbreviation for alkaline.
A
Abbreviation for acid.
G
Abbreviation for gas production.
S
Abbreviation for hydrogen sulfide production.
Butt
Bottom of the TSI tube.
Slant
The rest of the TSI tube.
Sulfur Indole Motility (SIM) Agar
Tests for cysteine desulfurase, tryptophanase, and motility.
Cysteine Desulfurase (SIM)
Breaks down cysteine to release hydrogen sulfide gas.
Iron (in SIM)
Indicator used in SIM agar for cysteine desulfurase test; media turns black if positive.
Tryptophanase
Breaks down tryptophan and releases indole.
COVAX Reagent
Reagent used to identify the presence of indole.
