The Soviets were very poor and needed food for their people, willing to work with the US to get US wheat.

 lets our allies carry some of the weight on containment. allows allies to build militia to help with containment costs of communism

US military arms to other nations to reach $10 billion per year, and raised oil prices to pay for the weapons. And frequently used the weapons on their own people.

Explain why Nixon "Vietnamized" the war.  What, and why, effect did this have on American military forces in Vietnam?

  • US ground troops leave, ARVN takes over, Nixon promised he would end the Vietnam war, so he has to continue fulfilling that promise.

Why did Nixon feel the need to bomb and invade Cambodia?

  • To destroy the Ho Chi Minh trail which was now pushing into Cambodia.The US bombed Cambodia to destroy arms depot, US ground troops penetrated into Cambodia, which we were not at war with at all.

  • Public reaction: not as thrilled, restarted the antiwar movement 

  • US troops kept leaving. Morale and discipline dropped

The Paris Peace Accords, signed on January 27, 1973, established a ceasefire in Vietnam, a timeline for the withdrawal of U.S. troops and advisors, and the return of prisoners of war. The agreement also included provisions for the reunification of Vietnam through peaceful means and the establishment of a National Council of National Reconciliation and Concord to oversee elections in South Vietnam
