DNA Replication
The process of copying DNA, occurring in the S phase of the cell cycle.
DNA Polymerase
Enzyme that creates new DNA by using a template strand and monomers (nucleotides).
Nucleotides
Monomers or building blocks of DNA, present inside the cell and used by DNA polymerase to create new DNA.
Denatured/Unzipped DNA
The process of converting double-stranded DNA to single-stranded DNA for replication.
Template Strand
The original strand of DNA used by DNA polymerase as a guide to make new DNA.
Complementary Template Strands
Two strands of DNA that split apart, each serving as a template for new DNA synthesis.
Direction of RNA Polymerase Movement
RNA polymerase moves down the template strand in a 3' to 5' direction, creating new DNA.
ORI (Origin of Replication)
Specific site on a bacterial chromosome where replication begins.
DNA Polymerase Directionality
DNA polymerase moves down the template in a 3' to 5' direction making new DNA.
Semi-Conservative Replication
Each new DNA contains one original strand and one newly synthesized strand.
