Cherokee
A Native American tribe that lived primarily in the southern Appalachian Mountains, practiced agriculture, and had a matrilineal society.
Matrilineal
A society in which lineage and inheritance are traced through the mother.
Muscogee (Creeks)
A Native American group that lived in Georgia and Alabama and was organized into independent towns.
Subsistence Agriculture
A type of farming in which crops are grown primarily for personal consumption rather than for sale.
Stono Rebellion
A revolt by enslaved Africans in South Carolina in 1739, inspired by the promise of freedom in Spanish Florida.
Stono Rebellion Act
An act passed after the Stono Rebellion that tightened slave codes and restricted the movement and education of enslaved people.
James Oglethorpe
The founder of the Colony of Georgia in 1733.
Buffer Colony
A colony created to protect another territory, specifically Georgia's purpose to protect South Carolina from Spanish Florida.
Slavery in Georgia
Initially banned in Georgia, slavery was later legalized in 1751 due to economic pressures.
French and Indian War
A conflict fought between Great Britain and France from 1754 to 1763 over control of North America, which left Britain in debt.
