Crude oil
a naturally occurring, unrefined petroleum product formed over millions of years and composed of hydrocarbon deposits and other organic materials
Polyester
any group of polymers that are used in making fibers and plastics and consist of repeated units of an ester (an organic compound made by replacing the hydrogen of an acid by an alkyl or other organic group)
Propane
a heavy flammable gas found in crude petroleum and natural gas and used as a fuel
Plankton
little plants and animals that live in oceans and lakes today, through time when they die they sink to the bottom of those oceans with sediment, mud, and clay to become thick layers of inorganic mud
Mud
buried hundreds of feet thick and the organics in there- the plants and animals- get heated and pressured and cooked into crude oil (takes 10-100 million years)
Oil
a versatile product but we can't use it in its native state
About half of all oil goes into
gasoline
Examples of refined oils
gasoline
jet fuel
diesel fuels
lubricants
propane
What is oil used for
everything, polyester for our clothes, building products, and plastics
How is propane used
barbeque pits
asphalt for roads
What other variable converts plankton into oil?
pressure
