What is the key concept of Stuart Hall?
Articulation/Conjuncture
How does this concept of Articulation/Conjuncture play into Stuart Hall’s potential view of Racial Capitalism as a concept.
Sees race and class ‘Articulate’ differently depending on the historical moment. Racism and Economy (capitalism) link only happens under certain historical circumstances (Which he calls conjuncture). It’s his way through the example of a lorry with a hitched trailer, to show these concepts are moving together and at times linked but it isn’t a permanent connection.
Stuart Hall said “Race is the Modality which class is lived.” what does that mean
It’s how Stuart Hall explains the link in daily life. He argues that people don’t experience their economic class as an abstract concept; instead , they experience it through their race. For example, a worker might experience exploitations not just as a worker, but specifically as a black worker due to how the system uses race to organize labor.
Stuart Hall specifically speaks about historical specificity with links. This relates to Cedric Robinson’s view on racial capitalism how?
Hall rejects that racism is transhistorical (eternal) Instead, he argues we must look at “historically specific racism.” Every era “articulates” Race and Capitalism differently to solve a specific crisis of that time.
