Osmolarity

Peripheral parenteral nutrition is limited by osmolarity of the solution (<=900mOsm). A hyperosmolar solution would cause thrombophlebitis

Central parenteral nutrition is ideal for high osmolarity

Fat/Lipid PN use

To prevent fatty acid deficiency

Avoid hypertriglyceridemia

SMOF lipids

Soybean oil

Medium chain triglycerides

Olive Oil

Fish oil

PN indications

Used when the GI tract is non-functional

• Know health complications that would be examples of non-functional GI

Refeeding syndrome

Caused by electrolyte shifts

• Specifically potassium, Phosphate, magnesium
