A system of ranking items, people or places according to level of importance or size.
Urban sprawl
The expansion of urban areas into surrounding areas.
What are the 7 levels of the urban settlement hierarchy in SA (largest to smallest)
- Primate metropolitan area (Johannesburg-Ekurhuleni conurbation), 2. Major metropolitan area (Cape Town, Durban), 3. Metropolitan area (Bloemfontein), 4. Major country town (Grahamstown), 5. Country town (Upington), 6. Minor country town (Bredasdorp), 7. Local service centre (Drummond).
