Psychic Conflicts

Oedipal Complex

Electra Complex
A term used by Freud to describe a girl's psychosexual competition with her mother for her father's attention.
Organ Inferiority
A condition where a person feels inferior due to an actual or perceived physical defect.
Fictional Self
A concept where individuals present an idealized version of themselves that may not be authentic.
Identity Crisis
A developmental conflict where individuals seek to understand their personal identity, often during adolescence.
Basic Anxiety
Feelings of fear and vulnerability that arise from parental indifference during childhood, according to Karen Horney.
Basic Hostility
Feelings of anger or resentment that may develop towards parents when they are perceived as indifferent or rejecting.
Trust vs Mistrust
Erikson's first psychosocial stage where infants learn whether or not they can trust the world based on their caretaker's responsiveness.
Generativity vs Stagnation
Erikson's seventh stage where adults reflect on their contributions to society and evaluate their productivity.
Ego Integrity vs Despair
Erikson's eighth stage where older adults reflect on their life and either achieve a sense of fulfillment or regret.
Collective Unconscious
Carl Jung's concept that all humans share a set of memories and ideas inherited from our ancestors.
Archetypes
Universal symbols found in the collective unconscious that shape human behavior and experiences.
Parental Indifference
A lack of emotional support or caring from parents, which can lead to neurosis according to Karen Horney.
Overcompensation
The process by which individuals try to counteract feelings of inferiority by exaggerating qualities they wish to possess.
