Anthropology
the social science that studies the origins and social relationships of human beings, comparative study of various aspects of past and present cultures
Physical Anthropology
The systematic study of humans as biological organisms; also known as biological anthropology
Cultural Anthropology
The study of human society and culture, the subfield that describes, analyzes, interprets, and explains social and cultural similarities and differences
Ethnology
The study and analysis of different cultures from a comparative or historical point of view, utilizing ethnographic accounts and developing anthropological theories that help explain why certain important differences or similarities occur among groups.
Archaelogy
Past human life as shown by fossil relics and the cities, monuments, and artifacts left by ancient peoples
Anthropological Linguistics
The scientific study of human communication within its sociocultural context
Culture
The enduring behaviors, ideas, attitudes, and traditions shared by a large group of people and transmitted from one generation to the next

Economic Systems

Social Systems

Reciprocity

Redistribution
A form of exchange in which goods flow into a central place, where they are sorted, counted, and reallocated
Market Exchange
An economic system in which goods and services are bought and sold at a money price determined primarily by the forces of supply and demand
Egalitarian Societies
Societies in which everyone has about equal rank, access to, and power over basic resources.
Stratified Societies
Societies in which people are hierarchically divided and ranked into social strata, or layers, and do not share equally in basic resources that support survival, influence, and prestige.
Kinship
A social bond based on common ancestry, marriage, or adoption

A social institution found in all societies that unites people in cooperative groups to care for one another, including any children
