Self-Determination
A nation's ability to freely decide its own political allegiance or form of government.
Right of self-determination (UN definition)
All peoples have the right to freely determine their political status and pursue their economic, social, and cultural development.
Decolonization
The process through which nations grant independence to their colonies.
Successor States
New nations that emerge when larger nations break up, such as the break-up of Austria-Hungary after WW1.

A peaceful way of achieving self-determination where the people vote on their independence from a larger nation.
