Primary productivity
Biomass generated from photosynthesis and chemosynthesis.
Net primary productivity (NPP)
NPP = GPP - respiration.
Consumption efficiency
Proportion of biomass that is ingested and not wasted.
Secondary productivity
The biomass produced by consumers, derived from consuming primary producers.
Mesopredators
Mid-ranking predators in a food web that can be preyed upon by higher-level predators.
Trophic efficiency
The efficiency at which energy is transferred from one trophic level to the next.
Freshwater productivity
Influenced by phosphorus.
Marine productivity
Limited by iron, then nitrogen, then phosphorus. Highest at continental shelves and middle latitudes.
Terrestrial productivity
Limited by temperature and precipitation. Highest at trophics.
Assimilation efficiency
Proportion of ingested food that is assimilated, and not lost as waste.
Production efficiency
Proportion of assimilated food that is not lost to respiration, and is used for growth and reproduction.
