Energy security
The adequate, reliable, and affordable supply of energy that provides a degree of independence.
Fossil fuels
Natural substances formed from the remains of ancient plants and animals, contributing to the majority of humankind's energy supply but with varied environmental impacts.
Renewable energy
Energy from sources that are not depleted when used, such as solar, biomass, hydropower, wind, wave, tidal, and geothermal.
Greenhouse gases (GHGs)
Gases in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide and methane, that trap heat and contribute to global warming.
Mitigation
Strategies aimed at reducing the causes of climate change, particularly by lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
Adaptation
Adjustments made to manage the impacts of climate change and to minimize adverse effects.
Carbon capture and storage (CCS)
A method of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by capturing and storing it underground.
Enhanced greenhouse effect
The increased heating of the Earth due to higher levels of greenhouse gases as a result of human activities.
Tipping points
Critical thresholds in climate change, where a small change in conditions can lead to significant and often irreversible impacts.
International climate conferences
Global meetings, such as those organized by the UNFCCC, where nations discuss and negotiate strategies for addressing climate change.
