Complex Experimental Designs
Research designs that include more than one independent variable and multiple levels of independent variables.
Dependent Variable (DV)
The variable that is being measured in an experiment; it is affected by changes in the independent variable.
Independent Variable (IV)
The variable that is manipulated or controlled in an experiment to test its effects on the dependent variable.
Factorial Design
An experimental design that examines the effects of two or more independent variables simultaneously.
Curvilinear Relationship
A relationship between two variables that is not a straight line; it may increase for a certain range then decrease for another.
Main Effect
The direct effect of an independent variable on a dependent variable in an experiment.
Interaction Effect
An effect in which the impact of one independent variable on the dependent variable varies depending on the level of another independent variable.
2 x 2 Factorial Design
The simplest form of factorial design where there are two independent variables, each with two levels.
Participant Variable (PV)
A characteristic of the participants in an experiment, such as gender, age, or experience.
ANOVA (Analysis of Variance)
A statistical method used to determine whether there are any statistically significant differences between the means of three or more independent groups.
